I love books with ghosts and time travel but this book lost me. I have to say, within the first 10 pages or so, I was already regretting this download.
SPOILERS-Jared came off super whiny and immature at first as he complained to his grandfather about the will situation, but it got better after that first few chapters. At least he didn't act that way for the rest of the book and was gentlemanly, if not exactly manly.
For me, I just prefer a more alpha male lead. And I prefer a stronger female lead. Alix and that spelling annoyed me throughout the entire book came off very naive and almost babyish. I understand she was young, but she cried to her dad on the phone that Jared was lying to her after that first night. She didn't seem to have much resolve or maturity to stand up to him or figure out her own problems until later in the book, and then it was barely there.
At first when Jared was complaining about how this young girl would be drilling him for information about architecture, I thought we would see a female lead who would be too proud to ask him or confident enough in her skill that she wouldn't seek his approval. But no.
Instead, she planned to do exactly what he was thinking! At that point I was afraid it was just another predictable story, and honestly, lots of parts were. I didn't understand the whole thing about the chapel; her designing it, her wanting to keep it a secret, why it was so important to build it, etc.
It seemed poorly explained and a weird part of the story. I just thought it could have been amped up to another level and been totally awesome if the characters weren't so predictable. And, I will most likely read the next 2 installments, though I don't see myself paying for them so I'll wait for them to be available at the library. I'm looking forward to the story of Lexie and Roger most. An implausible plot and dull storytelling made me skip parts just so I could get to the end.
All the characters were one dimensional and boring. Everyone was beautiful and talented and rich. When I first started reading Ms. Deveraux's novels, her stories were so moving that they would make me cry. This time, I yawned.
I read this some time back in paperback. Then, I got it for my site.
I enjoyed reading it again. I liked the sci fi element.
I liked the jumble of characters even if they are all fairytale beautiful. I have now read the book three times which is unusual for me. I don't usually read books a second, never mind a third time.
But I do love romances, sci fi and fairy tales, and this book has them all rolled into one. I have been reading Jude Deveraux books for more than half my life, and I voraciously read anything she publishes--guest blogs, her novels, short stories, her Vook. If her name is on it, I'm downloading it. I feel like I know the Montgomery and Taggert families and have a deep fondness for her characters.
What got me hooked on Jude Deveraux books are her wonderful stories. They are well-written, wildly entertaining with witty dialogue that makes me laugh out loud frequently.
Most of all, they are heartwarming and make me feel happy inside. When I deployed to Iraq, I brought A Knight in Shining Armor and Remembrance with me to read for comfort and saved them for when I was having a particularly difficult time.
It was like visiting old friends and provided me with an escape. True Love reminded me of Jude's earlier books. She brought the Montgomerys and Taggerts back, and introduced distant but equally charming relatives of theirs, the Kingsleys. True Love was like a love letter to Nantucket and made me very much want to visit there and eat breakfast at Downyflake and wander around and look at the houses.
After reading the book, I know to swap my usual stiletto heels for some stylish flats that would be appropriate for walking on cobblestone. The level of details on Nantucket culture and history was masterful, yet weaved in so seamlessly throughout the story, it did not feel like reading a textbook or guidebook.
I loved the characters and their relationships and interactions with one another. Victoria was larger than life, Alix sweet and likable, smart and talented, Jared amazing and dreamy. I fell in love with him during the scene where he and Alix were babysitting. The friendship between Alix and Izzy was so genuine, it made me miss my best friend. The writing is exquisite and tickled my imagination with beautiful imagery of beaches, gorgeous scenery, and a diamond sparkling in a room full of candles.
Also, two ladies trying to outdo each other with jewelry until they were so ostentatiously accessorized that they would have shined in a dark room. LOL If you want a book that will make you smile, laugh, sigh at how romantic it all is, and will have you rooting for the characters to get their happily ever after, True Love is a must read!
I'm so happy that it is the first in a trilogy as I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters yet. This is my second time reading True Love and it was even better reading it the second time around! Well done, Jude! One person found this helpful. Word Wise: Enhanced Typesetting: Page Flip: Audible book: Enabled Word Wise: Never heard of one in real life That would never happen in the modern times! Because in the modern times people don't date for years and years and YEARS before taking the plunge?!
The whole idea of "dating before marriage" as well as engagements that last for years!
Both her parents seemed to be secretly spending time in Nantucket and no one told her Well that just seems stupid - but not the "ultimate betrayal" the book is making it out to be! Also, I don't see how the lies were justified?! Apparently her mother says "She saw little Alix crushing on that boy Jared and knew that if they grew up together Alix would focus on him and never follow her own dreams Is everyone crazy?!
So why is she super shocked and upset that Caleb is the ghost?! She's known about the ghost all along, so who did she think Caleb could be when he appeared for her?!?!
Wasn't it obvious from the old portrait and from all the stories that it was him?!?! And Alix is just a pushover who allows her mother to manipulate her And all of this, in the end, turned out to be the mother's manipulative plan to get Alix and Jared closer together! But then with Alix's mother taking everything over - it made even less sense!!! Why were there random people being invited to this wedding?!
Whoever the wedding was meant for Izzy or Alix why were random people invited to it?! And the last minute wedding switch?! Why would Alix and Jared want something like this?! This farce, full of strangers Izzy's guests and other random stuffy Nantucketers that Alix doesn't even know!site Renewed Refurbished products with a warranty.
Things happen but they are cleared up in the next paragraph and everything is all better. Her modern stuff just rings false.
